KOCHI: District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish has ordered closure of all brick kilns functioning in Kadungalloor Panchayat. The Collector also asked the panchayat secretary to file a report after ensuring that all clay extraction and the functioning of brick kilns in the panchayat are stopped before 5.30 p.m. on Wednesday. The secretary and the panchayat will be held responsible if the orders are not implemented, according to the Collector. The ban comes in the wake of reports on the functioning of unauthorised brick kilns all along Kadungalloor panchayat, the Collector said. Indiscriminate extraction of clay from paddy fields has resulted in the creation of large ditches filled with water, which poses a major threat to the people. Recently a crocodile, which was found hiding in one such ditch, had created panic among local people. At least 25 brick kilns are functioning in Kadungalloor panchayat, according to unofficial estimates.
