KOCHI: The Eravikulam National Park will be closed from February 15 for the calving season of the Nilgiri Tahrs, Chief Wildlife Warden of the Forest Department V. Gopinath has said. The park will remain closed till March 30 and visitors will not be permitted into the park during this period. Last year, the park was closed on January 12. This year, the closure date was postponed to mid-February due to the late calving of the Tahrs. This has been attributed to the prolonged rain in the park. During the last calving season, birth of 47 Tahr calves was reported. The Tahr population in the park according to the Tahr census in May 2005 is 670, park officials said.
