Thiruvananthapuram: District Collector N. Ayyappan has recommended a detailed inquiry into the food poisoning case in which children from two city schools were taken ill on February 3. In his report submitted to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Mr. Ayyappan suggested a probe by a special investigation agency to unearth any irregularities in the supply of raw material for the noon meal scheme. The Collector said a preliminary inquiry had blamed the poor quality of the rice and sambar served to the students. The report said the sambar prepared by the Vanchi Poor Fund was found to contain high levels of bacteria, while samples of the rice were foul-smelling. It said though the rice supplied by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) was of good quality, the stocks in the godown of the Civil Supplies Corporation and that used by the Vanchi Poor Fund were inferior and contained bacteria. "Obviously, the rice sourced from the FCI is not the same as used by the Vanchi Poor Fund. There is room to suspect some foul play in the supply chain from the FCI through the Civil Supplies Corporation to the Vanchi Poor Fund," the report said. The Collector has also recommended a probe into the functioning of the Vanchi Poor Fund, which cooks and supplies meals to Government schools under the noon meal scheme.
