Priority for hydropower projects: Shinde

New Delhi: India is likely to have the highest ever hydropower capacity addition during the Tenth Plan, according to Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde.

Addressing a meeting of the parliamentary consultative committee attached to his Ministry, Mr. Shinde said as much as 10,000 MW of hydro capacity will be added during this Plan, the highest ever in any five year period.

A capacity of 5,380 MW has already been added in the 10th Plan till now. The total addition during the plan period is expected to be 10,000 MW. The capacity addition during the Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth Plans was 3828 MW, 2428 MW and 4538 MW respectively.

Incentives

Mr. Shinde said high priority has been accorded for development of hydro projects. Several incentives have been included in tariff notification for hydro projects such as rewards for better availability, generation of secondary energy and measures for mitigating hydrological risks during initial years of operation.

According to an official release, he said the Government has put in place a three-stage clearance procedure for speedy sanction of hydel projects to be executed by central public sector undertakings in consultation with the Finance and Environment Ministries.
