Letters to the Editor
The interview with Ziauddin Sardar (Feb. 13) was inspiring. Intellectuals should come together to work on the future of Islam in the developing world. Illiteracy and impoverishment are major factors that need to be tackled within developing societies. Let the likes of Mr. Sardar take the initiative at a global level to educate the community. We, the moderates, are with him. The Hindu deserves praise for publishing the interview.
Jaffer A.A. Khan,
Mr. Sardar's suggestion to Muslims to re-think and reformulate Islam as a contemporary worldview is welcome. There is no question that there is an urgent need for Muslims to introspect. There are many shining examples of the Prophet using wisdom to settle disputes and at times even sacrificing legitimate rights for the sake of peace. A true Muslim cannot go berserk under any circumstance. Mr. Sardar is right in pointing out that there is a victimhood mentality among many Muslims and that they need to transcend it.
V.M. Khaleelur Rahman,
Mr. Sardar's statement that the two cultures can coexist with mutual trust and respect is praiseworthy. While the West must respect the religious sentiments of Muslims, Muslims must learn to be more tolerant.
Mohammed Younus Hussain,
Just as cartoons offend Muslims, destruction of idols offends followers of other religions. No faith, therefore, should glorify the destruction of another faith.
