Thanjavur: Winning a prize for best performance in the celebrated Republic Day parade in New Delhi is no mean achievement. A troupe of children from South Zone Cultural Centre at Thanjavur has won the second prize for its Karadiyattam at the R-Day parade held in New Delhi on January 26 this year. The director of the centre, A.C. Mohandoss, received the prize, a silver cup, from Pranab Mukherjee, Defence Minister, at Delhi. Friends of South Zone Cultural Centre, a voluntary organisation, felicitated Mr. Mohandoss at a funxction held here on Tuesday. Collector M. Veera Shanmugha Moni presented a shawl to Mr. Mohandoss. V. Varadarajan, president of Friends of South Zone Cultural Centre said it was heartening to note that after 20 years of its establishment, a troupe from the centre has won a prize in the Republic Day parade. We hope that the troupe from the centre will win the first prize next year, he said. Mr. Mohandoss said there was also another honour for Thanjavur. Students of Kundavai Nachiyar Government Arts college won the appreciation of many in Delhi for their Oyilattam. The troupe performed in 20 places in the capital, including the Delhi Tamil Sangam.
