BANGALORE: Canara Bank upstaged Sports Authority of India 3-1 at the Hockey Stadium here on Wednesday. Appanna (11th) scored first for Canara Bank and Nilesh set up an interesting clash levelling the scores for SAI in the 27th minute. Canara Bank's seasoned campaigner John Verghese slotted home two penalty corners in the 53rd and 55th minutes to clinch the match for Canara Bank.The first match of the day was called off as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited pulled out of the tournament. HAL sought a postponement of its match citing injury to some of its players but when it was refused by the tournament committee, the team pulled out. Thursday's match in that pool will now be crucial as Karnataka State Police and Maharatta Light Infantry had earlier played out a 2-2 draw. The match on Thursday between Army XI and KSP and the margin of victory will decide which two teams will qualify for the next phase.
