MAHE: Pondicherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy has said that the State Government will earmark plan allocation of Rs. 2,500 crore in the State's budget 2006. Inaugurating the new Fire Service Complex at Puthalam here on Wednesday, the Chief Minister said that the State Government had already earmarked Rs. 40 crore for assisting poor families living in thatched huts to construct houses. The Government's plan was to eliminate thatched huts and provide permanent dwelling places to the poor in two or three years, he said. Mr. Rangasamy said that the Government had launched a scheme for providing LPG connections with stoves to families below poverty line. Nearly 10,000 LPG connections would be provided in the Pondicherry State this year, he said adding that Rs. 2.5 crore had been earmarked for this. Mahe MLA and Pondicherry Health Minister E. Valsaraj said that the Rs. 15-crore drinking water project for Mahe that involved supply of water from Anjarakkandy river by the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) would be completed in two months. The Pondicherry Government had to pay Rs. 11 lakhs a month to the KWA, he said. The Minister also said that Mahe was now having uninterrupted power supply from the Kerala State Electricity Board. In the education sector, Pondicherry had become a model as it was giving 60 per cent of the Rs. 1.5 lakh education fees of students studying in medical colleges. The Government was also providing breakfast and cycles to school students. Minister for Local Administration and Fisheries A. Elumalai, Parliamentary secretary A.V. Sreedharan, MLA, Secretary, Fire Service, A.K. Chaturvedi, Pondicherry Development Commissioner Anand Prakash and Regional Administrator of Mahe Krishna Kumar Singh were present.
