19 lakh applications for inclusion in electoral rolls

    CHENNAI: Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta on Wednesday said about 19 lakh applications were received for inclusion of names in the electoral rolls during the current summary revision, with January 1, 2006 as the qualifying date.

    The number of claims constituted 4.23 per cent of the total electorate of 4.48 crore in the State. The applications would be processed and verified before the names are included in the rolls, Mr. Gupta told newspersons here.

    The draft rolls were published on January 27. After processing the new applications, the State Election Department would publish the final rolls on February 27. As time was short, the department would send teams to the Assembly constituencies where the receipt of applications was heavy for quick processing.

    The attention of the district election officers had been drawn to the instructions of the Election Commission on the disposal of claims and objections. It had been emphasised that close monitoring was essential. The statistics on receipt of claims was also furnished to the Election Commission, he said.

    Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami, during his two-day visit to Tamil Nadu on February 23 and 24, would review the disposal of claims and objections of the applications with district election officers.

    He would visit Tiruchi and Madurai on the first day and Coimbatore and Chennai the next day. He would also meet political leaders in Chennai and discuss the receipt of applications.

    Mr. Gupta said the receipt of applications was heavy in the Assembly constituencies of Erode (18.32 per cent), Poonamallee (16.82 per cent), Karur (15.33 per cent), Tirupur (14.44 per cent), Tuticorin (14.26 per cent), Palladam (14.02 per cent), Dindigul (13.42 per cent), Pollachi (13.13 per cent), Thanjavur (12.80 per cent) Kumbakonam (11.77 per cent), Periyakulam (11.13 per cent), Vellore (10.90 per cent), Ramanathapuram (9.01 per cent), Kancheepuram (9.86 per cent) and Cuddalore (9.88 per cent).

    About, 7000 claims for inclusion were made online.

    Analysed district-wise, he said the receipt was seen to be heavy in the districts of Theni (8.54 per cent), Karur (8.52 per cent), Tuticorin (7.02 per cent), Ramanathapuram (6.20 per cent), Thanjavur (6.15 per cent), Virudhunagar (5.99 per cent), Coimbatore (5.76 per cent), Erode (5.66 per cent), Cuddalore (5.47 per cent), Vellore (5.33 per cent) and Dindigul (5.1 per cent).

    Asked whether any date had been fixed for the Assembly elections, Mr. Gupta said it was to be decided by the Election Commission.
