Paying and playing for a cause

BANGALORE: Sania Mirza, who bowed out of the WTA Bangalore Open, will play a Pro-Am match with Santosh Lad, MLA, the highest bidder with Rs. two lakhs, in a charity tie here on Thursday. Vijay Amritraj will be the Master of Ceremonies.

The bid to play with Sonia started at Rs. 99,000 before closing at two lakhs. Mr. Lad was delighted at the opportunity to play with Sania.

"I am a tennis fan and I made the winning bid because the money is going to be used for a worthy cause — take tennis to rural areas. And of course, who doesn't want to play with Sania?" Mr. Lad said.

For the disappointed Sania fans, the charity match would be of some consolation. — Special Correspondent
