Gast Ram shuts out Arjun Singh

NEW DELHI: Gast Ram and Basad Ali took the first day's honour beating highly-seeded players in the opening round of the Rs. 10 lakh Kohinoor Open matchplay golf championship at the Delhi Golf Club course here on Wednesday.

Gast Ram recovered in time after being down by two against sixth seeded Arjun Singh with just five holes to go. Just when Arjun Singh looked to seal his place, Gast Ram rallied by winning the 14th and 15th holes on birdies to even out the scores. The two shared the 16th before a birdie on the par-3 17th saw Gast Ram take the crucial lead.

Arjun Singh had his worst nightmare came true when he hit the bushes on the vast par-5 18th before he conceded the match.

In the top half, Basad Ali defeated 17th ranked S. Madaiah 3 and 2 in the 64-player draw. In the same half, Digvijay Singh flirted with danger after being 2 up till the 16th hole. Digvijay lost the 17th before yet another scare on the 18th holes had him in knots. He had wandered into the vegetation on the left but came out nicely before sharing the hole to win 1 up.

Seeded players had easy wins as Mukesh Kumar Anand Kumar 5 and 4, Vijay Kumar defeated Karanjit Singh 6 and 5 and S. S. P. Chowrasia beat Balbir Verma 6 and 5.
