"Film awards also aimed at elections" "No other government has made so many announcements like winged white ants"

CHENNAI: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi wants the Election Commission to take cognisance of the plethora of election-eve announcements by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

In a statement here, he said usually governments make a few announcements before elections depending on the necessity. But no other government had made so many announcements like "winged white ants." And in no other government had the announcements met with the fate of the wings of the white ants.

The film awards being given now was also aimed at elections, he alleged. For two years, the files were bundled and cast away.

Now they were hurriedly taken up and the awards announced. Similar was the story of the Kalaimamani awards. Neither those in filmdom nor the people were fools, he asserted.

Registration of marriages

Mr. Karunanidhi said the Supreme Court directive on registration of marriage would be welcomed by all. Register marriages could also be termed rationalist marriages.

Bogus voters

In another statement, Mr. Karunanidhi alleged that the Election Commission's "failure" to take action against some State Ministers and functionaries of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, for stuffing of electoral rolls, had led to the repetition of the mistake.

Recalling that he had complained to the Commission the last time when the stuffing of rolls took place, Mr. Karunanidhi said he had received authentic reports that such incidents had taken place in all districts.

Seeks intervention

He demanded that the Commission intervene and take appropriate steps.
