Staff Reporter

To be held in Gandhi Museum from February 22 to 28

MADURAI: The image of the Father of the Nation with a walking staff in hand and striding steadily is among the everlasting depictions of the Mahatma by the Bengali artist, Nandlal Bose, who sought to immortalise him.

Many rare images of the Mahatma during his epoch-making march to Dandi taken out in defiance against the British, who prohibited Indians from making salt, would be represented at a pictorial exhibition to be held in the Temple City from February 22 to 28.

The exhibition would assay to depict this historic incident that assumed socio-political significance in the Indian freedom struggle.

Several photographs of the Mahatma and 78 male sathyagrahis who set out on foot for the coastal village of Dandi from Sabarmati on March 12, 1930 would be on display.

The march lasted for 23 days and on April 6 Gandhi picked up a lump of mud and salt and produced salt defying the British ban.

The incident would come alive through the photographs and relevant images on Mahatma Gandhi and all those who participated in the march.

The exhibition, to be held under the aegis of the Archaeology Department, would be inaugurated by the Collector, D. Raajendiran.
