HYDERABAD: Inspector James Diwakar of the Panjagutta police station was seriously injured when a motorcyclist rammed his vehicle into him in front of the police station late on Tuesday night.

Inspector Diwakar has been shifted to Yashoda superspeciality hospital in Somajiguda where his condition is stated to be critical.

The two motorcyclists who were also injured, were treated as outpatients. They were identified as Mujahid Ali (20) and Shaik Nadeem (19) and were taken into custody.

    Multiple fractures

The accident occurred when Mr Diwakar was trying to cross the road to reach his police station.

The police officer and Sub-Inspector Nageswara Rao were returning to the station after patrolling the area.

"We stopped by Hyderabad Central and were walking towards the station on the other side of the road," Mr Rao recalled.

As Mr. Diwakar stepped past the divider near the signal post, the motorcycle coming from Khairatabad side rammed into him. The police officer took the full impact of the collision and was flung into the air. "He fell on the side of his head," a dazed Mr. Rao recalled.

Mr. Diwakar sustained multiple fractures on his left thigh and skull. The policemen accompanying him rushed him the officer to the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), but he had to be shifted to Yashoda, as the CT scan equipment was not available at NIMS.

Police said the motorcyclists were allegedly drunk. Ali was a student of graphic design, while Nadeem was a ninth class student. Ali who was driving the motorcycle did not possess a driving licence.

They had gone to Nampally to have dinner, but were returning home as they found the hotels closed.

"All I remember is falling off the bike after the accident. When I opened my eyes, I was on the hospital bed," Nadeem told The Hindu .
