Bank accounts of two colleges attached

NEW DELHI: The Property Tax Department of Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday attached the bank accounts of three properties, including two colleges, as there were outstanding property tax dues against them.

The Corporation said the accounts of Desh Bandhu College, Kalkaji were attached as the outstanding arrears were Rs 69.43 lakhs, while those of Dayal Singh College, Lodhi Road were attached because a payment of Rs 68 lakhs was due from it. Likewise, the bank account of the owner of 98 Nehru Place was also attached since a sum of Rs 32 lakhs was due in property tax.

MTNL supervisor arrested

NEW DELHI: A supervisor with Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, who was wanted in a fraud case for the past couple of years, has been arrested by the Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi police.

According to the police, the accused, Rekha, had cheated several persons on the pretext of getting them jobs in the Delhi Metro railway and had taken Rs. 60,000 from each of them for the purpose.

Labourer crushed to death in a lift

NEW DELHI: A 17-year-old labourer was crushed to death in a lift as it began moving up while he was loading some articles into the car at a building at Nangloi in West Delhi on Wednesday.

According to the police, Kasim, a resident of Nihal Vihar, worked as a labourer in a plastic products factory at Udyog Nagar in Nangloi. Around 11 a.m., he was loading a consignment of plastic products on the ground floor when the lift suddenly began moving up. As a result Kasim's head got crushed between the lift car and the side wall.

Engineer and supervisor arrested

NEW DELHI: The engineer and supervisor of the construction company, which had undertaken the task of construction work at 47 Golf Links, where a wall collapse on Tuesday had left one dead and three others injured, have been arrested by the New Delhi police.

Three alleged smugglers held

NEW DELHI: Three alleged drugs and wildlife product smugglers were arrested at the Indo-Nepal Border on Tuesday by a joint team of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the Kheri police in Uttar Pradesh.

According to the SSB officials, 60 pieces of deer and antelope horns, apart from 2.1 kg charas and a country-made firearm, were recovered from the smugglers, identified as Chhote Lal, Bimal Kumar and Vinod Kumar,

`Eureka' festival

NEW DELHI: The NIILM Centre for Management Studies will be organising its fifth annual festival, "Eureka", here from Friday.

Starting with business quiz, marketing games, advertisement games, case study analysis and business plan developments, the two-day festival will end with a "Hasya Kavi Sammelan" hosted by Ashok Chakradhar. Other programmes will include drama, dance and singing competitions.

R.K. Narayan Award

NEW DELHI: Former Tamil Nadu Governor Bhishma Narain Singh presented the R.K. Narayan Award for 2005 to J. Bhagyalakshmi at a function here recently. The award carries a cash prize of Rs.10,000, a memento and a certificate.
