Integrated water development project launched

It will moderate water salinity and stabilise coastal aquifers in the bioregion

PONDICHERRY: "Auroville Water Harvest", a non-governmental organisation, launched on Wednesday a three year integrated development project in Kodur village for moderating salinity of water and also for stabilising and proofing of coastal aquifers in the affected area in the bioregion. The NGO had been addressing issues concerning water management in the Auroville bioregion covering an area of 1400 sq km on the Kaluvelly watershed for a decade. A release from the organisation said that the project would cover seven villages in Vanur taluk in the neighbouring Tamilnadu.

The project officer of District Rural Development Agency, Villupuram Mr. J. Sampath launched the programme, funded by "Fondation Ensemble, France". Tank Associations were also formed and works such as de-silting of tanks and ponds, de-weeding and clearing of the irrigation channels, construction of check dams, rejuvenation of the tanks were forming part of the works taken up through the project. Promotion of drinking water supply and ensuring sanitation formed part of the integrated components of the Millennium Development Goals along with empowerment of women. The Regional Director (in charge) of Central Ground Water Board (South Eastern Coastal Region) R. Varadharajan presided over the inaugural function.

V. Gopalsamy, deputy director (Geology) PWD Ground Water Division, Chennai, V. Radhakrishnan, Hydro Geologist-II, State Ground Water Unit Pondicherry, A. Sundaramoorthy Aassistant director of PWD Ground Water Division in Cuddalore and Dr V.N. Varma, deputy director (Chemistry) in Agriculture Department Pondicherry, were among those who participated.
