KARUR: Plans are afoot to improve a section of the historic Rani Mangammal Salai that centuries ago linked Tiruchi and Karur so that vehicles plying towards Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode and Kerala could avoid the troublesome railway level crossing at Lalapet. This comes even as the National Highways Authority of India has started constructing a Road Over Bridge at Lalapet. Interestingly, the amount to be spent on the road improvement comes from seigniorage from sand sales that accrues to the panchayats along the Cauvery. Administrative sanction has been given for developing a particular stretch between Thimmachipuram and Sithalavai, a distance of about six km, at a cost of Rs. 1.17 crore in the first phase.
