The volleyball inclusion

Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM: While the inclusion of `rekhla race' in the list of rural sports is viewed as an attempt to appeal to MGR fans and rekindle memories of the late Chief Minister in the minds of rural women, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) cadres in Kancheepuram claimed that the inclusion of another game (popular in certain pockets of the State) was a gesture made to a particular political party leader, in the opposition camp.

To prove their point, they note that while ball badminton — which is popular all over the State among both young and old — did not find a place in the list, volleyball — popular in Tirunelveli district — figured in the circulars issued to the Block Development Officers.

The AIADMK cadres did not fail to note that even during his 19-month detention at the Vellore prison, the leader [Vaiko of the MDMK] played the game enthusiastically with the other prisoners there.
