Job scheme officials lauded

GULBARGA: Secretary of the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj N. Sivasailam on Thursday lauded the implementing officials of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) for their efforts to link all 337 gram panchayats in Gulbarga district with banks and post offices.

They have also opened more than 41,000 bank accounts in the names of those registered under the scheme.

Mr. Sivasailam, who reviewed the programme with senior officials of panchayats and bankers here, said the opening of bank accounts of gram panchayats for transfer of funds and individual accounts of those seeking employment was an important component of the programme as wages will be paid through cheques.

Chief Executive Officer of Gulbarga Zilla Panchayat Pankajkumar Pandey, who made a video presentation of the progress achieved so far, said of the 337 gram panchayats, 105 gram panchayats have been linked with nationalised banks.

As many as 35 gram panchayats have been linked with cooperative societies having banking powers, and 197 gram panchayats have been linked with post offices.

Mr. Sivasailam said 20,000 individual accounts have been opened in post offices.

Taluk panchayat executive officers, presidents, vice-presidents, officials from the link departments, zilla panchayat officials and representatives from non-governmental organisations participated in the meeting.
