This Day That Age
We deeply regret to record the death of Dr. Meghnad Saha, eminent scientist and a member of the Lok Sabha, after a heart attack on February 16. Dr. Saha was on his way to the Planning Commission office in Rashtrapati Bhawan to attend a meeting when he collapsed a few yards from the office. An official of the Planning Commission, who saw him slumping to the ground, immediately rushed him to the Willingdon Hospital, but Dr. Saha had already passed away. Dr. Saha had been suffering from high blood pressure for the past ten years. Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Mr. Ananthasayanam Ayyangar, Pandit Pant, Dr. K.N. Katju, Mr. C.C. Biswas, members of the Union Cabinet, and MPs belonging to various parties visited the Willingdon Hospital to pay their last respects to Dr. Saha. Dr. Saha was an active member of the Lok Sabha and took keen interest in the rehabilitation of East Bengal refugees. Dr. K.S. Krishnan, Director of the National Physical Laboratory of India, said that he was shocked to hear the news of Dr. Saha's death. "Prof. Saha's contributions to physics have been immense and have considerably influenced its progress. Besides being a great physicist, Prof. Saha had many wide interests."
