Illicit spirit seized, five held

HUBLI: The Hubli-Dharwad Police have seized 8,540 litres of illicit spirit from a godown in the Honaga industrial area, near Belgaum.

Five persons have been arrested in this connection.

Narayan Nadamani, Commissioner of Police, Hubli-Dharwad, told presspersons here on Thursday that a car which was being used for transporting spirit has also been seized.

Rs. 10 lakhs

He said the seized spirit is estimated to cost Rs. 10 lakhs.

Mr. Nadamani identified the arrested as Ramappa Shankarsa Allur, Anil Narayansa Bhandage, Parashurama Ramasa Jituri, Bhojaraj Gurunathsa Habib and Shridhar Ganapati Mulgund.

Manju Kabade, owner of the car, and Shankarsa Baddi, main accused, are absconding, he said.

The police found the spirit cans when they stopped the car at Karwar Road check-post. Based on the information given by the driver and others travelling in the car, they conducted a raid on the godown. Mr. Nadamani said the spirit has been brought from Madhya Pradesh.

Efforts are on to trace the person who supplied the spirit.
