MANGALORE: Sandesha Foundation for Culture and Education, Mangalore, announced its annual Sandesha Awards here on Thursday. The eight-member Sandesha Awards jury headed by writer N. D'Souza has made a procedural change in finalising the winners based on their deliberations rather than on the earlier procedure of selecting winners from the applications received. Announcing the names of winners and institutions at a press conference, Mr. D'Souza said the other departure this year is that the awards in 10 different categories will be presented on the lawns of the foundation at Premnagar, Bajjodi, here on February 28. The foundation during the past few years organised the awards presentation ceremony at the Town Hall. A.R. Mitra, Bangalore, will receive the Sandesha Literature Kannada Award; the Sandesha Literature (Konkani) Award (Lifetime Achievement) goes to Wilfy Rebimbus, Mangalore; D. Krishnananda Chowta, Bangalore, will receive the Sandesha Literature (Tulu) Award; Sandesha Cinema/TV Award has been bagged by S. Mynavathi of Bangalore; H. Madaya of Bangalore will receive the Sandesha Arts Award. The jury has chosen Balakrishna Kilingaru Nadumane of Bangalore for the Sandesha Journalism Award, while P. Abdul Majid of Bhavaikyata Vedike, Hospet, will receive the Sandesha Media Education Award. Gopadkar of Mangalore will get the Sandesha Best Teacher Award. All these awards will carry a purse of Rs. 10,000, a trophy and a citation. The Sandesha Special Recognition Awards 2006 instituted by Sandesha trustees will be conferred on C.R. Chandrashekar of Bangalore for his research in and service to patients with mental disorders and B.S. Talwadi of Bangalore for his research in Christian Folklore and Literature. These awards also carry a purse of Rs. 10,000, a trophy and a citation. M. Veerappa Moily, Chairman, Administrative Reforms Commission, K.M. Kaveriappa, Vice-Chancellor, Mangalore University, and T.S. Nagabharana, film-maker, who will be the chief guests, will present the awards. M.K. Seetharam Kulal and Eric Ozario, Chairmen of Karnataka Tulu and Konkani Sahitya Academies respectively will be the guests of honour. Aloysius Paul D'Souza, Bishop of Mangalore Diocese will preside over the function.
