Ashok, Mundy ousted

Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI: Ashok Kumar and Uttam Singh Mundy made hasty retreat as they wandered into the woods quite often in their second round matches in the Rs. 10 lakh Kohinoor Open matchplay championship at the Delhi Golf Club course here on Thursday.

Third-seeded Ashok Kumar was a total disappointment on a rather fast-playing course that otherwise suits his style of play. Ashok lost the opening four holes to Vishal Singh that actually set the tone of the match. Ashok tried his best to bridge the gap by retrieving two holes by the seventh hole.

Vishal Singh, however, kept his ball straight and forced Ashok onto back-foot. Ashok lost 12th and 13th holes on bogies before Vishal completed the formalities by sinking a good birdie on the par-5 14th.

Big void

In what should have been a Mundy-Ashok pre-quarterfinal, the loss of two ranked players left a big void in the bottom half of the draw. Mundy also strayed into the bushes and lost to Sandeep Syal 3 and 1. Second seeded S.S.P. Chowrasia and seventh seeded Harinder Gupta were the only players of reckoning remaining in this half.

In the top half, Mukesh Kumar and Vijay Kumar continued with their mercurial form, both winning by 5 and 4, against Mohammed Islam and Naman Dawar respectively.

The results:

Important results (second round): Mukesh Kumar bt Mohammed Islam 5 and 4, C. Muniyappa bt Dinesh Kumar 3 and 2, Pappan bt A.S. Malik 1up, Vijay Kumar bt Naman Dawar 5 and 4, Digvijay Singh bt Shiv Prakash 2 up, S.S.P. Chowrasia bt Ali Sher 2 up, Binod Pandey bt Jaiveer Virk 1 up, Harinder Gupta bt Randhir Ghotra 2 and 1, Sandeep Syal bt Uttam Singh Mundy 3 and 1, Vishal Singh bt Ashok Kumar 5 and 4, Ranjit Singh bt Rafick Ali 2 up, Vivek Bhandari bt G. S. Sethi 3 and 2.
