Landmine detected

VISAKHAPATNAM: The police have unearthed a powerful landmine suspected to have been planted by the CPI (Maoist) on the main road from Koyyuru to Chintavaripalem in the agency area of Visakhapatnam. According to Officer on Special Duty Vineet Brijlal, 6 kg of gelatine sticks was used in the landmine. Meanwhile, G. Suribabu, 18, a militia member of Korukonda dalam, surrendered to the police at Chintapalli citing ill health. - Staff Reporter

Fiat on scholarships

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has instructed officials to immediately release scholarship amount of Rs. 3 crores sanctioned to students of Kapu, Telaga and Balija communities. HYDERABAD: The finals of the first national-level business plan competition, India Venture Challenge, organised by Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ) and The Indus Entrepreneurs India will be held at the Indian School of Business on February 20. Railmen hail decision

HYDERABAD: The Joint Council of Action, AP region of South Central Railway, has welcomed the decision of the national JCA to defer the strike in view of the settlement reached with the Centre. In a statement issued here on Thursday, JCA convenor of Central Government Employees Organisations of the region Ch. Nellore: Auction for providing various amenities for the Brahmostavam of Penchalakona temple of Rapur mandal has fetched a record Rs. 50.37 lakhs. Last year, the auction fetched only Rs. 26 lakhs. - Staff Reporter

Housewife tricked

Nellore: Arunamma, 65, a housewife in Rapur town, was tricked into parting with her gold chain on Thursday. A stranger promised to cure her of illness and sprinkled some water on her. She then fell asleep. Taking advantage of the situation, the miscreant took away her gold chain. The police are investigating. - Staff Reporter

Bid to steal Nandi idol

Nellore: Unidentified miscreants made an abortive attempt to steal the ancient Nandi idol in Kommipadu village of Sydapuram mandal on Wednesday night. According to information, the miscreants gained entry into the Nandiswara temple, uprooted the idol but left it on the outskirts of the village. The Clues team visited the village. - Staff Reporter

Job `agent' held

TIRUPATI: The Tirupati crime police have arrested R. Shankar, 30, a self-styled job agent, at Thathayagunta area here on Thursday for allegedly hoodwinking unemployed youths with jobs in Kuwait. Shankar allegedly promised P. Prakash Reddy of Pakala a job in the Gulf and absconded with Rs.75,000 after leaving him in Mumbai. - Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) will be holding a South India-level spiritual convention, `Dharma Samsad', in Tirupati on March 4 and 5. VHP president Ashok Singhal and general secretary Praveen Togadia will attend the huge public meeting arranged at the end of the convention.

Several religious heads, spiritual gurus and pontiffs of mutts from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh would attend the conference, a release said. - Staff Reporter

Training programme on food safety begins

CHITTOOR: Joint Collector Rajendra Prasad on Thursday inaugurated a two-day training camp for hostel employees on food safety. It is being jointly organised by the Andhra Pradesh Consumer Health Foundation and the Social Welfare Department.

Red sander logs seized

Nellore: The Sullurpet police seized a van and recovered red sander logs and powder worth some Rs.1.50 lakhs after a hot chase on Thursday. On seeing the police on the national highway, the van driver reversed the vehicle and tied to speed away. The police followed the vehicle. Houses destroyed

KADAPA: Houses of two handloom weavers -- Venkatakrishnaiah and Subbalakshmamma -- were gutted in Settigunta village in Railway Kodur mandal in the early hours of Thursday. None was injured though rice bags, clothes and utensils were destroyed. — Staff Reporter

Two killed in

accident

CHIRALA: A woman and a seven-month-old baby died and three persons were injured in a road accident on Thursday. .

According to Vetapalem SI V. Bhushanam, RWS Executive Engineer Quaja Ahmed, along with his family members, was proceeding to Vodarevu to inspect water schemes. As the jeep reached the bypass road around 5 p.m., a school bus rammed the jeep killing Hazarat Parvin, wife of Mr. Ahmed, and Nazarat (seven months), their granddaughter, on the spot. Mr. Ahmed (55), jeep driver, Ahmed Basha (40) and EE's son, Md. Ibrahim, sustained major injuries.

Some students also received minor injuries. The Vetapalem police booked a case. - Correspondent

Lifer for killing wife

ELURU: First Additional District Sessions Judge Ch.V. Subba Rao on Thursday awarded life imprisonment to a person, Kopparaju Chinmayananda Babu, for killing his wife.

According to the prosecution, Chinmayananda Babu, a private company employee based in Vijayawada, set fire to his wife Jhansi Lakshmi Bhai, an employee in the local N.S.R.K Women's College, and killed her in 1992 demanding more dowry. - Staff Reporter

new branch opened

Kakinada: The Additional Superintendent of Police Anjuri Radha has inaugurated the new branch of the Corporation Bank at the Bhanugudi Junction area here on Thursday. P V Narasimharao, Assistant General Manager Vijayawada Zone, said the branch came into being with the upgradation of the existing extension counter. He claimed the new branch would be the first in the district to go on line.Bank's Branch Manager Nageswerarao said they would be extending financial assistance to all sections at liberal interest rates.
