SHIMOGA: Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, who holds the Finance portfolio, said on Wednesday that he will plug pilferage of funds earmarked for development works and will re-allocate them for rural development. Speaking after his arrival at Shikaripur, his native town about 60 km from here, he said he knew how to stop misuse of funds and re-allocate them for development works. He said that the financial allocation to zilla panchayats will be increased from Rs. 1,300 crores to Rs. 3,500 crores by the Government. Funds to gram panchayats will be increased from Rs. 600 crores to Rs. 1,500 crores, he added. He said the Budget, which he will present shortly, will be in favour of rural development with a special emphasis on extension of benefits to farmers and on irrigation projects. While stating that his Government is committed to the development of Bangalore, Mr. Yediyurappa promised it will give equal importance to development of infrastructure in districts including Shimoga. He said the Sanyasikoppa Lift Irrigation Project in the Shikaripur taluk which has been pending for several years will be completed soon. He said Rs. 9 crores will be earmarked for it in the Budget. Other pending development works in Shikaripur taluk such as the concrete lining of the canals of the Anjanapur reservoir and the Ambligola irrigation project will be taken up, he added. Earlier while reviewing the progress of the development works at the Deputy Commissioner's office in Shimoga, he asked the officials not to come to the review meetings only with problems but also with solutions.
