Tele enquiry system to help access passport information

The 24-hour facility has 30 extensions

CHENNAI: A special telephone-based passport information system has been activated at the Regional Passport Office, Chennai, for the benefit of the public.

This passport information number (1250244) can be dialled to get general information about the travel document procedures besides finding out the present status of applications submitted/processed in the RPO.

According to Sumathi Ravichandran, Regional Passport Officer, Chennai, this new tele-information system has been made possible with the assistance of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Chennai Telephones.

The 24-hour facility has 30 extensions and the logistics support has been provided by the National Informatics Centre (NIC). Applicants residing outside Chennai can also access this system by prefixing the dialling the code - 044/95.

The automatic speech recognition system is the first of its kind among the passport offices in the country. While the English version is presently available, efforts are on to introduce the Tamil version shortly, she added.

Passports despatched

A release from the RPO says passports in respect of applications with the following details were despatched in the week ending February 11. Chennai city cases with file numbers up to A-030600/05 and submitted up to October 25, Chennai city cases submitted in Speed Post centres with W-series and submitted up to October 17, other district cases submitted in passport office with file numbers up to B-047688/05 and submitted up to October 25, minor cases with file numbers up to F-016697/05 and submitted up to December 16, renewal of passports with file numbers up to C-034032/05 and submitted up to November 29, renewal of passport issued by other offices with file numbers up to V-005826/05 and submitted up to November 16.
