Clashes mar Naigaum polling

Special Correspondent

MUMBAI: Clashes between supporters of the Congress and the Shiv Sena here marred voting in the Naigaum Assembly by-election on Thursday. Over 50 per cent voters exercised their franchise.

Mayor of Mumbai, Datta Dalavi (Shiv Sena), was involved in a scuffle and the car of a municipal corporator, Supriya Narvekar (Shiv Sena), was damaged in an attack. Two polling booths were damaged as party workers clashed. Police sources said several persons were injured in stoning.

In the Shrivardhan constituency in the neighbouring Raigad district, the polling was relatively peaceful. About 60 per cent voters cast their votes.

The by-elections in Naigaum and Shrivardhan were caused by the resignation of the Sena MLAs who joined the Congress, following Narayan Rane. These MLAs are seeking re-election — Kalidas Kolamkar from Naigaum and Shyam Sawant from Shrivardhan. Ms. Shradhdha Jadhav and Mr. Tukaram Surve are the Sena candidates.
