KOCHI: More than 500 student volunteers under the National Service Scheme (NSS) have completed assets survey of the local bodies in the district during a 10-day camp held at various places in Ernakulam district.

The survey was a State-wide one in which volunteers physically ascertained the assets of each of the local self-government bodies. The exercise was preceded by a training programme for the NSS programme officers and officials of the local governing bodies by the faculty of the Kerala Institute of Local Administration.

An official of the NSS said that the exercise went off smoothly and that it was a great experience for the volunteers comprising students from six technical education institutions. The institutions that were involved were: Government Polytechnic College and Women's Polytechnic College, Kalamassery; Polytechnic Colleges at Koratty, Perumbavoor and Kothamangalam as well as Mar Athanasius College of Engineering, Kothamangalam.

The NSS official said that the exercise was important considering that the Second Finance Commission had recommended a survey of the local bodies so as to ascertain the extent of the maintenance grant needed by each of the local bodies. In the future, the annual maintenance grant would be decided on the basis of the information received through the assets survey.

The assets verification exercise by the volunteers was supervised by seven programme officers from the various institutions that were involved. They camped at various locations in the district to survey 88 panchayats, 15 block panchayats, eight municipalities and the Corporation of Kochi.

Meanwhile, the annual meet of the NSS and distribution of the annual awards were held at Mar Athanasius College of Engineering on February 11 and 12.
