NEW DELHI: The Delhi Jal Board on Thursday said the curtailment in water supply being experienced by residents of South and East Delhi over the past few days was temporary in nature and had been caused due to some problems at Bhagirathi Water Treatment Plant on account of low turbidity in the raw water received through the Upper Ganga Canal. The Chief Executive Officer of DJB, Arun Mathur, said the problem was due to "a change in quality of raw water at the Bhagirathi Water Treatment Plant, which receives 200 cusecs (100 MGD) of raw water from Uttar Pradesh. Of this water, some is supplied to East Delhi and South Delhi''. Mr Mathur said as the technical process of water purification demands certain level of turbidity for proper treatment as flocs do not form otherwise, the filters in the plant were getting clogged and water was getting consumed in the process leading to reduction in the productions capacity by almost 25 per cent. With efforts being made to solve the problem, he said water supply is expected to normalise in about five days.
