Students urged to be good at academics

Employment opportunities hinge on the ability to face global competition, says Hanuman Chowdary

  • Employers will give top priority to skills
  • IT revolution brings about a sea change in employment scenario

GUIDING GEN NEXT: Director of Centre for Telecom Management Studies T. Hanuman Chowdary (second from the left) exchanging greetings with A. Trimurthy, professor in ANU at a seminar in Vijayawada on Friday.

VIJAYAWADA: Director of Centre for Telecom Management and Studies T. Hanuman Chowdary on Friday called upon students to be good at academics, as they would have to face global competition to secure good employment opportunities in the future.

In the scenario of globalisation, employers would give priority to knowledge and skills while selecting candidates and those who had good academic background would get ample opportunities with handsome remuneration packages, he said.

Dr. Chowdary was one of the resource persons at a seminar on `Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO): Opportunities and Challenges' organised jointly by the postgraduate centre of the P.B. Siddhartha College of Arts and Science and Vijayawada Chapter of the Computer Society of India at Siddhatha Auditorium.

    Vast resources

He said India had vast human resources compared to other developing countries. A good number of engineering and IIT graduates from India were migrating to developed countries and taking part in so many inventions and developments.

In the coming days, however, there would be a change in the situation and the graduates need not leave the country to work for foreign companies, he said and attributed the credit to recent revolution in information and communication technologies.

"Now the BSNL has announced India One scheme and is offering STD calls to anywhere in the country at a cost of Re.1 per minute. Same is the case with Internet and video conferencing facilities which are available at cheaper prices," he said.

He foresaw a future when the Knowledge Process Outsourcing would be the `mantra' for the developed countries, which would depend on countries like India to have their projects done.

    Over to experts

"Our experts will work for foreign companies by sitting in their houses here. It will be on the lines of Business Process Outsourcing, under which a big company is dividing a project into different parts and having it done by small companies from different countries," he said.

Referring to the outsourcing of tutoring, Dr. Chowdary said that over 20,000 American students were learning mathematics and science from Kerala teachers online.

A group of faculty members and students and IIT Chennai had launched a company `Heymaths' to teach mathematics online.

Indian technicians would continue to offer their services to their global customers. Vice-president of Satyam Computer Services Limited Krishna Koneru, ICT consultant Vinay, executive director of the NHRD Network K. Satyanarayana, CEO of Info Shine Technologies Limited S. Krishna Rao and seminar coordinator Rajesh C. Jampala were present.
