Jodhpur: Bollywood actor Salman Khan was sentenced on Friday to one year imprisonment for killing an endangered animal. The sentence was suspended for 30 days, during which he will appeal.

Salman (40) was also fined Rs. 5,000 by Chief Judicial Magistrate B.K. Jain, who held him guilty of killing a Chinkara, a deer species, in September 1998 at Bhavad village in Jodhpur district.

Others acquitted

Seven others accused in the case, including comedian Satish Shah, were acquitted.

Salman did not speak to the media but his counsel Hasitmal Sarswat said he would file an appeal in the Sessions Court against the judgment.

Besides Shah, those acquitted in the case were Kuldeep Singh, Mohd. Hussain, Yashpal Singh, Mahendra Pal Singh alias Rajubana, Dushyant Singh and M.S. Bhati.

It was one of the four cases filed against Salman for hunting endangered animals.

Salman was charged with hunting the Chinkara during the night of September 26-27, 1998, when he was in Jodhpur for the shooting of a film. — PTI
