Islamic body not to hold mass protest

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: To avoid causing inconvenience to the public, the State unit of Edara-E-Sharia has said it will not organise processions or mass protests against the publication of cartoons depicting Prophet Muhammed in a Danish newspaper.

Edara-E-Sharia President A. Ameer Jan told presspersons on Thursday that Muslims led by him presented a memorandum to Governor T.N. Chaturvedi expressing their anguish over the publication of the cartoons.

He said Muslims in the State are peace loving and their organisations have been working for promoting communal harmony and national integration.

In State's interest

In a press release, he said: "We as responsible citizens of Karnataka have taken upon ourselves to avoid mass protest and unwanted processions which are not in the interest of our State or our nation."

Mr. Jan said his organisation is against publication of defamatory material against any religious leader or religious book. Those who do so should be punished, he added.
