On Friday, it organised a programme to mark its decennial year

MANGALORE: Mangalore University's Microtron Centre organised a programme here on Friday to mark its decennial year.

The centre was set up in 1995 during the tenure of M.I. Savadatti as Vice-Chancellor to conduct research in radiation physics and related areas.

It was set up in collaboration with the Centre for Advanced Technology (now Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology), Indore, and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai. The Department of Atomic Energy has recognised it as a centre for excellence in radiation physics and radiological sciences. The Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS) has sanctioned 12 major research projects to the centre under a memorandum of understanding with the university.

Inaugurating the celebration at Mangalagangotri, V.C. Shani, Director, Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology, said the university should develop the centre as a nuclear physics research hub.

It is a unique facility among universities in the country, she added.

R.K. Bhandary, Chairman, Microtron Advanced Centre and Accelerator Technical Committee, BRNS, and Associate Director, Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, Kolkata, said it has been decided to upgrade facilities at the centre.

Funds will be made available after the university sends a proposal, he said. He said it is planned to organise an international conference on nuclear data at the university in October.

Mr. Savadatti; K. Siddappa, former Vice-Chancellor, Bangalore University; and D. V. Gopinath, former Director, Health System and Environmental Group, BARC, spoke. K.M. Kaveriappa, Vice-Chancellor, Mangalore University, presided. Registrar K. Sundar Naik was present.

Head of the Microtron Centre N. Govinda Nayak welcomed the gathering.
