Globalisation poses serious challenge to the Indian economy: acting VC

Special Correspondent

Says it should be faced with courage and determination as it cannot be wished away

DISCUSSING ECONOMY: Acting Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University E.T. Puttaiah addressing a seminar on effects of globalisation on Indian economy in Shimoga on Friday.

SHIMOGA: Acting Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University E.T. Puttaiah said here on Friday that there is hardly any field in the country which is not affected by globalisation, which poses a serious challenge to the Indian economy.

Inaugurating a seminar on the effects of globalisation on the Indian economy, at the Sahyadri Arts, Science and Commerce College, he said that globalisation has come to stay. It should be faced with courage and determination as it cannot be wished away, he said.

K.C. Basavaraj of the Postgraduate Department of Economics at the University of Mysore made a strong plea for the effective implementation of the D.M. Nanjundappa Report to remove regional imbalances. He said there is a need to improve basic amenities in several parts of north Karnataka.

Prof. Basavaraj said India has not been able to achieve overall development even 50 years after Independence. "What has been achieved in the name of development is only lopsided," he said. He said that agriculture should form priority in the economic activities and added that though there has been a greater realisation on the part of the Government on this score, efforts being put in by it did not match the seriousness of the problem.

Emphasising the need for giving more importance to native farm practices as they are best suited to the requirements of the Indian cultivation, Prof. Basavaraj said the University of Agricultural Sciences should try to improve the efficiency of local farm practices with innovative experiments.

Head of the Postgraduate Department of Economics at Kuvempu University T.R. Manjunath, principal of the Sahyadri Science College B.R. Siddharamappa and principal of the Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College Venkobrao were present.

Head of the Economics Department at the Sahyadri Arts College G.S. Chandramouli explained the objectives of the seminar. K. Puttappa welcomed the gathering.
