KURNOOL: The CPI(M) team, led by M.A. Gafoor, MLA, which embarked on a marathon walk through the villages of Kurnool district returned on Friday.

Mr. Gafoor and his team mates reached the city 31 days after they started the journey on January 19 and covered over 780 km interacting with people in 200 villages.

Another team led by T. Shadrak will arrive here on Saturday which passed through the villages in Nandyal, Atmakur, Allagadda and Banaganapalli.

    `Appalling' conditions

Mr. Gafoor who visited Pathikonda, Adoni and Yemmiganur said the conditions in upland area of the district were appalling. The drought conditions were no different from those of Anantapur district. Mr. Gafoor said Gajuladinne project was going to be seriously affected by Hundri-Neeva canal as a majority of the catchment area of Hundri river would be sychronised with the Hundri-Neeva project. He said the tail-end areas in Yemmiganur, Mantralayam and other places were facing serious shortage of water.

Mr. Gafoor suggested that the capacity of Hundri-Neeva be enhanced to 70 tmcft instead of 40 tmcft to increase the ayacut in Kurnool district. Covering only 80,000 acres in Kurnool district would not make much difference.

On the diversion of water to Anantapur from Tungabhadra project, Mr. Gafoor said the diversion should be allowed only after fully meeting the requirement of Kurnool district.

The CPI(M) MLA said the power to distribute houses to the poor should not be given to political fucntionaries. Injustice was done to the poor as elected representatives handpicked only their supporters.

He said the CPI(M) would launch an agitation soon in Kurnool for house sites as only the wards selected for Indiramma programme were distributed.

Ramakrishna, Ramanjaneyulu, Ratnamma and others were present.
