House condemns cartoons on Prophet

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Assembly passed a unanimous resolution on Friday condemning the portrayal of the Prophet Mohammed by a Denmark-based magazine and wanted the Centre to convey to the Danish Government its concern over the issue.

Moving the resolution, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said the sacrilegious caricature of the Prophet hurt sentiments of Muslims.

Dr. Reddy wanted publications and the press to carefully handle matters pertaining to religion. Condemning the publication, Opposition leader N. Chandrababu Naidu stressed the need for increasing tolerance among the communities. CPI(M) member T. Veerabhadram suspected a conspiracy behind the episode while MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi said the culturally-insensitive cartoons hurt the feelings of the community. BJP member G. Kishan Reddy wanted an amendment to the resolution to condemn incidents in which Hindu deities were portrayed in a bad light.
