Eight starvation

deaths alleged

Nyalkal (Medak) : CPI(M) leaders have alleged that eight persons have died due to starvation in the Surampalli village of Doultabad mandal under Dommata assembly segment. Chukka Ramiulu the CPI(M) Medak district committee secretary said that he had personally verified the facts from the bereaved families and found that none of them had a ration card or Antyodaya card.— Staff Reporter

Exchange of fire

KHAMMAM: The police had an exchange of fire with CPI (Maoist) near Komanapalli village in Dummugudem mandal on Friday. The police party raided the village following information that the naxalites were holding a meeting in the area. HYDERABAD: The State CPI(M) has appealed to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to lift "illegal" restrictions imposed on people in Kolleru Lake area following establishment of 22 checkposts.

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Employees' Association, while welcoming the decision to implement the Girglani report and GO 610, has demanded repatriation of lakhs of non-local employees working in 204 departments to their native zones.

Rs. 3 lakhs seized

Nellore: Forest officials of Venkatagiri town have seized a van along with three of its crew and red sanders valued at Rs. 3 lakhs on Friday. The van with Tamil Nadu registration was going towards Chennai and the officials, on a tip off, chased and it on a two-wheeler and nabbed it at Lingampadu toll plaza in Sullurpet mandal. — Staff Reporter

ADILABAD: The condition of Asifabad MLA A. Sridevi, on her second day of hunger strike on Friday, was stable, according to the doctor who examined her in the afternoon. The Telugu Desam Party MLA, however, said she felt a little weak. Nellore : Officials of Anti-Corruption Bureau, led by V.S.R. Chowdary, DSP, nabbed M. Simon, Sub-Inspector, women police station, Nellore, when he was allegedly receiving Rs. 1,000 from an RTC conductor on Friday. The conductor, Mallikarjuna Rao, had a tiff with his wife and the latter filed a case against him. Man found dead

KURNOOL : A person, identified as J. Madduleti, 50, was hacked to death at Puttupalli in Mahanandi mandal of Kurnool district on Friday.

According to reports, Madduleti, who had land disputes in the village, was found dead at the farm. Sickle injuries were found on his body. - Staff Reporter

Call to protect forests

KADAPA : Collector G. Asok Kumar on Friday called for concerted effort to protect forests, particularly red sanders, a valuable treasure available in the district, from plunderers. Addressing the District Forest Conservation Committee meeting here, he said red sanders weighing 34.45 tonnes, worth Rs. 34.85 lakhs were seized and 1,112 cases booked this year, the Collector said. - Staff Reporter

KADAPA : Burglars broke into Reliance Webworld showroom at Koti Reddy circle in Kadapa town in the early hours of Friday and stole Rs. 52,000 in cash.

Kakinada: A 27-year-old housewife, Gada Bhavani, committed suicide by setting herself ablaze following a petty quarrel with her husband . The Kadiyam police have registered a case. In another incident, Malayagiri Eliyafez Latha, (23), reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself to the ceiling in her house in Seethanagaram on Friday .The Seethanagaram police have registered a case. VIZIANAGARAM: Municipal Chairperson M. Geetha cautioned land grabbers and said the administration would file criminal cases against them. She said that it had come to her notice that some people were selling vacant municipal lands by producing fake documents and asked buyers to be careful. Fencing of vacant lands would be taken up and notice boards would be put up on these lands. She asked vacant private land owners to pay taxes.

Corporation Bank to

open rural libraries

Kakinada: Corporation Bank will be opening rural libraries in 100 select villages to mark the centenary celebrations, said P V Narasimha Rao, Zonal Head, here on Friday. Addressing the customers meet, he said, they would be awarding scholarships for hundred economically weak and meritorious students during current year. Besides, he said, a commemorative postal stamp to mark the centenary celebrations also was being issued shortly. Referring to the performance of the bank, he said, the bank's net worth was Rs.3,400 crores with CD ratio standing at 14.91 percent.
