CHANDIGARH: Shiromani Akali Dal president Parkash Singh Badal has sought immediate intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to save Punjab from a "deep-rooted conspiracy by Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh to unleash an undercover army of benami killers to destabilise peace in the State". In a letter to Dr. Singh, written in the wake of controversy surrounding the role of the State police chief in protecting a self- styled `Area Commander' of the Khalistan Liberation Front (KLF), Amritpal Singh, alias Sukvinder Singh Sukhi, the Chief Minister expressed apprehensions that Capt Singh may indulge in political assassination before the Assembly elections. Amritpal Singh, as per the records, was killed an encounter but was living as a free man under an assumed identity of Harjit Singh Kahlon for almost one and a half decade, Meanwhile, talking to reporters, the Chairman of the All India Anti-Terrorist Front (AIATF), M.S. Bitta, has demanded a high- level inquiry by a Central agency to expose and neutralise the deadly nexus. He sought that the former ultra, who was reported missing till the disclosure, be traced and arrested immediately as he could provide some vital inputs. Reports in the regional media originating from Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur indicated that the alleged KLF operative was accused of making an assassination bid on senior BJP leader, Murli Manohar Joshi.
