MYSORE: A national consultation meet for developing guidelines on manuals of the school curricula for teachers commenced here at the Regional Institute of Education (RIE) on Thursday. Inaugurating the consultation meet, Dean of Instruction, RIE, G.T. Bhandage, said there is a proposal to provide multiple textbooks to schools as they widen a teacher's choice, and also provide scope for diversity. When a number of textbooks are available, the teacher can decide appropriate lessons to meet specific needs of the students, he added. He said textbooks play a vital role in promoting creativity among children, while enhancing their interest in learning. Mr. Bhandage said the manual can be designed in many ways and include resource materials and information from the Internet. These will provide tips to teachers, which they can use while planning lessons, he added.
Options
The manual, he felt, should provide a general grounding in the curriculum and should give the teacher a number of options. The manuals can also include some of the common mistakes committed by teachers. The purpose of developing general guidelines for the preparation of teachers' manual in school curricula is to help teachers working in government schools, he said. These manuals will also be useful in teachers' training programmes. Experts from across the country are participating in the national consultation meet.
