NEW DELHI: Along with much of North India, Delhi experienced a major power crisis on Friday morning as some unexpected fog caused a large-scale tripping of 400KV and 220KV in the complete Northern Region from around 4 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Due to the problem there was a shortage of about 650 MW of power which led to major load shedding in large parts of the Capital. Delhi Transco Limited said that in the absence of winter rain pollution levels in the northern region had gone up resulting in dust particles and other pollutants settling on the transmission line insulators.

As the dense fog settled on these dust-laden transmission lines in the morning, there was repeated tripping of the lines resulting into disruption of the system network and supplies in the region. North, North-west and West Delhi areas were the worst affected by the power crisis. However, power supply to South, East and Central Delhi and also to Delhi Metro and water works was maintained through the Badarpur, Pragati, Indraprastha and Rajghat power stations. While the power supply from the grid was normalised by around 9 a.m. it took the power distribution companies another hour to normalise supplies in their respective areas.
