Joint convention

NEW DELHI: A joint convention organised by the Delhi Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist)-New Democracy was held at Gandhi Peace Foundation here earlier this week.

Several prominent intellectuals like Ish Mishra of Hindu College and Dr. Nirmalangshu Mukherjee of Delhi University took part in the convention. Later a resolution calling upon the Union Government to withdraw the invitation extended to US President George Bush to visit the country was passed.

Traders to protest

NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party leader Vijay Goel on Friday said Delhi traders were preparing for an imminent "Delhi bandh" in protest against the ongoing demolitions.

Stating that the traders were holding continuous meetings, Mr. Goel said the traders were agitated at the attitude of both the Central Government and the Delhi Government and were concerned about their future.

Plea to Chidambaram

NEW DELHI : PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry in its pre-Budget memorandum has requested the Union Finance Minister to ensure that tobacco products continue to remain under Additional Excise Duty.

In a release, the Chamber has stated that since tobacco products contribute significantly to the revenue, the matter of changing the methodology of levy of rate of tax must be handled with caution. It has also objected to the idea of bringing cigarette under the Value Added Tax regime.

Quiz programme

NEW DELHI: A multi-media presentation as well as quiz programme dedicated to the 45th anniversary of Russian Space Era was organised jointly by the Russian Centre of Science and Culture and Institute of Russian Language at Ferozeshah Road on Friday.

Four students from Springdales School Pusa Road guided by their Russian language teacher Tatyana Shipilova viewed the presentation on Russian orbital space station `MIR" and participated in the quiz programme.

Garden Festival

NEW DELHI: The 19th edition of the Garden Tourism Festival organised by Delhi Tourism in association with Incredible India and Delhi Government was inaugurated on Friday by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

The gardens, based on the theme "Colours of Spring", have been created by NDMC, MCD, Central Public Works Department and Horticulture Departments of National Capital Region.

RWA election held

NEW DELHI: The election of Dwarka Residents' Welfare Association Pocket-I, Sector-I was held earlier this week.

An advocate, Hari Chand, was elected president; B.R. Chopra (vice-president); K.N. Singh Bindra (general secretary); R.D. Malik (treasurer) and Chandan Bose (joint secretary).
