Experts urged not to allow MNCs to take control of farming

Regional workshop on `Save paddy campaign' begins

  • Farmers told not to give up traditional methods of conserving seeds

    MANGALORE: A regional workshop on "Save paddy campaign" began here on Friday with a call to save local varieties of paddy for achieving self-sufficiency in food production and protecting the interests of farmers.

    Experts, farmers and over 100 delegates are participating in the two-day workshop, which is being organised by the Nagarika Seva Trust Guruvayanakere, Krishikara Vedike Karnataka and Thanal of Thiruvananthapuram. Presiding over the inaugural session, vice-president of the State unit of the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) Lakshmish Tholpady urged experts and farmers not to allow multinational companies (MNCs) to take control of paddy fields. Awareness on the importance of indigenous varieties of paddy should be created among farmers, he said.

    President of the zilla panchayat Mamata D.S. Gatti said farmers should make use of government schemes through raitha samparka kendras.
