VMC contactors' dharna today

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: In protest against the `indifferent attitude' of Vijayawada Municipal Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar, the Vijayawada Municipal Contractors' Association, which is on the a warpath for the past five days, has decided to stage a dharna in front of the VMC on Saturday.

Speaking to media persons, contractors' association president G. Seetharam said that bills worth over Rs 7 crores had been pending for many years and the contractors were facing acute financial constraints in carrying out the on-going work. "The officials blame on the dearth of funds. Our bills are pending for many years. The officials also reduce the payment if the works got delayed beyond the specified time. But the delay is due to the frequent inspections carried out by the officials, which prevents us from carrying out the works," Seetharam added.

Following the call given by the association, development works in city had come to a standstill as all the 60-odd contractors stalled their works, demanding payment of their pending bills.
