CRPF rough up journalists

Srinagar: CRPF personnel posted at a function organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee here to welcome Union Minister Saifuddin Soz rough up journalists who had come there to cover the meet. The media corps boycotted the event after the incident.

The media fraternity took exception to the manhandling of Shujaat Bukhari, Srinagar correspondent of The Hindu, by CRPF personnel while entering the PCC headquarters for covering the function where Mr. Soz was scheduled to address party workers.

Several other newspersons were also pushed and shoved by the security personnel as they were making their way to the venue, which was overcrowded with Congress workers. All the correspondents, photojournalists and cameramen left the function in protest.

Later, JKPCC chief Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, who is also Hajj and Auqaf Minister in the State, apologised to the mediapersons for the misbehaviour of the security personnel and promised an inquiry into the matter. — PTI
