Yogiraj, Anamika adjudged best

MADURAI : Yogiraj of A.P.A. College, Nanguneri, and B. Anamika of Lady College, Madurai, were adjudged the `Best Promising Athletes' in the men's and women's sections respectively in the first state-level open athletic meet organised by Madurai Athletic Club at Railway Stadium here on Saturday.

Southern Railway, Sports Association won the overall championship with 150 points.

KV in semifinals

Kendriya Vidyalaya entered the semifinals of the Pichaimani Nadar Memorial Trophy district-level inter-school cricket tournament defeating Oxford MHSS, Sivagangi by 28 runs in Karaikudi on Friday.

The scores: (quarterfinals): Kendriya Vidyalaya 105 for eight in 15 overs bt Oxford MHSS 77 in 13 overs (Karthik four for 17); S.M.S.V. HSS 57 for eight in 15 overs (Sivasankar four for 11) lost to Maharishi Vidyamandir 61 for six in 8.1 overs (Veeramani four for 18); Baba MHSS Thiruppathur 49 in 10.4 overs lost to Alagappa MHSS 50 for one in six overs.

Rajesh, Preethi win titles

R. Rajesh of K.C. Sivalinga Nadar HSS (Chennai) and R. Preethi of Dolphin MHSS (Madurai) claimed titles in their respective sections (under-19) in chess of the State Republic Day and Bharathiar Day inter-school sports meet held in Nagercoil recently.

The results: Boys: Under-19: 1. R. Rajesh, 2. P. Karthikeyan (Vellammal MHSS, Che), 3. S. Narendrakumar (VVMHSS, Cbe).

Kerala keeps title

Kerala retained the title defeating last year's runner-up Punjab 2-1 in the final of the 32nd All India Electricity Board football tournament organised by TNEB at SDAT Stadium in Dindigul on Saturday. At the interval, the teams were level 1-1.

Punjab went ahead through Tajwinder Singh in the 26th minute but Girish found the equaliser for Kerala in the 36th. Parry netted the match-winner in the 55th minute.

Host Tamil Nadu beat Haryana 2-0 in the third place match, with Irudayanathan and Parthiban in the scoring act.

Maruthu YC triumphs

Maruthu Youth Club, Chinnamanur, lifted the Hajee Karutha Rowther Memorial Trophy defeating Nattarasan Memorial SC, Ammapatti, 43-24 in the final of the District-level kabaddi tournament conducted by HKRH College in Uthamapalayam on Friday.

Other results: semifinals: Marthu YC bt Royal Recreation Club `A', Cumbum, 40-23; Nattarasan SC bt Winsun Club `A', Palarpatti, 22-8.

Quarterfinals: Maruthu YC bt DSP Club, Duraisamipuram, 32-17; Winsun Club `A' bt RRC `C' 36-14; RRC `A' bt Winsun `B' 30-16; Nattarasan SC bt Galaxy SC, KG Patti 20-17.

Govt. College, Coimbatore hogs limelight

Government Women's College (Coimbatore) claimed titles in volleyball, kho-kho and badminton in the State inter-polytechnic women's games meet in Virudhunagar on Friday.

The results (all finals): Ball badminton: Thiagarajar, Salem bt Govt. College, Coimbatore 29-22, 29-20. Volleyball: GWPT, Coimbatore bt Karaikal 25-13, 25-12. Kho-kho (final): Govt. College, Coimbatore bt GWPTC Madurai 31-30.

Reserve Line Sports Club, Madurai entered the semifinals of the seventh Hi-tech Arai BJPM Trophy State-level hockey tournament defeating Sports Authority of India (SAI) Hostel, Chennai 5-4 via tie-breaker at Thirunagar Hockey ground in Madurai on Saturday.
