NEW DELHI: Feroz Ali made it to the final of the Rs. 10 lakh Kohinoor Open matchplay golf championship by beating top-seeded Mukesh Kumar, at the Delhi Golf Club course on Saturday. Feroz will meet fellow Kolkatan S.S.P. Chowrasia in the 36-hole contest for the Rs. 2 lakh winner's cheque. The runner-up will settle for Rs. 1 lakh. Wayward shots undid Mukesh's plan from the start as Feroz chanced on every opportunity that came his way. Feroz won the first hole with a birdie and then then birdied the third while Mukesh double bogeyed to go 2 up.
Unstoppable Feroz
He took the turn three holes ahead and nothing could stop Feroz on the home stretch. A 25-foot birdie on the par-4 15th gave him the cushion before he won the 16th to close the match 4 and 2. "The greens and fairways are in the best of conditions and I hope to do better on the morrow," said Feroz after making his first matchplay final on the Indian Tour. Second-seeded Chowrasia was a touch better as he defeated Ranjit Singh 4 and 3. He even came up with an eagle, when he won the par-5 14th with a driver, 5-iron before sinking a 15-foot putt. Earlier in the morning, Chowrasia defeated seventh-seeded Harinder Gupta 2 and 1 in the unfinished quarterfinal match. Ranjit Singh accounted for Ajay Gupta, winning 4 and 3. The results: semifinals: Feroz Ali bt Mukesh Kumar 4 and 2; S.S.P. Chowrasia bt Ranjit Singh 4 and 3. quarterfinals: Chowrasia bt Harinder Gupta 2 and 1, Ranjit Singh bt Ajay Gupta 4 and 3.
