Railway not passenger-friendly

The railway is not passenger-friendly. When the Trivandrum Mail and Cochin Express was diverted from Podanur to Irugur, the railway arranged two slip coaches to Thiruvananthapuram. It was later withdrawn with an assurance that a new train will be introduced to Thiruvananthapuram. But when it was introduced it was truncated at Palakkad Town station. The train after reaching Palakkad Town is brought back to Palakkad Junction and kept idle for the next 15 hours. For the convenience of the passengers, the train should be extended to Salem or at least Erode.

The Coimbatore junction still awaits upgradation though it is a high revenue-earning centre. Thousands travel from Coimbatore to Erdoe via Tirupur without enough trains. The same is the case between Coimbatore and Madurai commuters opt for buses. If the line is converted into broad gauge, Madurai can be reached in four hours. It was announced that the Jan Shatabdi Express train running between Thanajavur and Coimbatore would be extended up to Kumabakonam. But it is still running up to Thanjavur. If this is converted into Coimbatore- Kumbakonam- Coimbatore it will be very useful for the people of Coimbatore.

R. Jagadeesan Coimbatore is set to become another IT city like Chennai. With Tirupur buzzing with industrial activities and Udhagamandalam becoming a tourist destination, I hope the Railway Minister will take necessary steps to increase the number of trains from Coimbatore junction.

The plight of the travelling public at the Coimbatore Railway Station is a direct contrast to the flagging off of the New Delhi - Bhopal Special Shatabdi Express with a speed of 150 km per hour to become the country's fastest train on Wednesday. The officials including the Ministers owe a response to this.

It will be convenient if the railway introduce a night express in the broad gauge (via Erode, Karur and Dindugal) between Coimbatore and Madurai at 10 p.m. and reach the destination by 6 a.m. If this is not possible due to traffic congestion, introduce a day express. The running time should be reduced with a minimum number of stops.

If there is no sufficient space to expand the Coimbatore Railway Station at the present location it can be shifted between Singanallur and Irugur where there is plenty of vacant land. A good connectivity should be made between Sinaganallur railway station and Coimbator airport

The stampede-like atmosphere prevailing in platforms 3 and 4 due to the narrow staircase has gone unnoticed for a considerable period. Only announcements have been made regarding converting the platform 6 into broad gauge, paving the way for handling more trains in BG, terminating MG services at Podanur Jn. Ravi

Coimbatore lacks not only adequate number of trains to various destinations but also some basic facilities for the passengers at the junction. There is an urgent need for more number of wheel chairs for the sick and old people. It is a common sight to see people with anxiety writ on their faces standing on long queues at the unreserved counters especially during weekends and season time. The authorities need to look into it.
