BIJAPUR: The Department of Minor Irrigation has sanctioned Rs. 3.15 crores to develop four new tanks in Tikota (Bijapur rural) Assembly segment, with which an area of 768 acres will be brought under assured irrigation. The villages sanctioned with tanks are Lohagaum, Somadevarahatti, Dhannargi and Yatnal. According to a statement from Tikota MLA M.B. Patil, apart from improving the water table in and around these villages, the tanks will help mitigate the drinking water scarcity. The Lohagaum tank will be developed at a cost of Rs. 45 lakhs and it will irrigate 175 acres. About Rs. 30 lakhs has been earmarked for Somadevarahatti tank that irrigates 150 acres of arid land. Dhannargi tank needs Rs. 98 lakhs for repairs and it can irrigate 300 acres. The tank at Yatnal is the smallest with a command area of 143 acres. It will need Rs. 1.42 crore. The combine storage capacity of four tanks is 40.16 million cubic feet.
