Breach in pipes affects drinking water supply

Water gushing out from broken line is drained into interior roads

POOL: Drinking water coming out of the damaged pipeline stagnating at Cooperative Nagar in Dindigul on Sunday.

DINDIGUL : A breach developed in the supply pipes at Cooperative Nagar near here has affected distribution of Cauvery drinking water to residential areas for the past four days.

Huge quantity of water, gushing out from broken pipe, has been drained into interior roads of Cooperative Nagar. Frequent breaches developed at various places disrupted uniform supply of water to residential colonies.

Even as the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board expedited re-laying of pipes, which were washed away in the recent floods at different places, to resume drinking supply to Dindigul, Natham and other wayside villages, frequent breaches in the pipes have interrupted supply. The TWAD Board set up temporary pillars on Amaravathi riverbed and laid pipes to resume Cauvery water supply. (Earlier, cement platform and 1000 mm pipes across the Amaravathi were washed away in recent flood).

The Dindigul MLA, K. Balabarathi, who visited the works in Karur recently, raised her doubts over the strength of the metal pillars.

"How can metal pillars carry 195-metre-long 600 mm dia main pipe with water?"

Reducing the size of pipe to 600 mm dia from 1,000 mm dia would not only reduce the quantum of supply but also increase pressure in the pipes.

Only one out of three electric motors for pumping water from river to works has been functioning. She appealed to take up permanent restructuring work at an estimated cost of Rs.2 crore, which would ensure uniform and regular supply to the town.

The MLA sought to enhance the capacity of pipes. All political parties are already vying with one another to claim credit for bringing Cauvery drinking water to Dindigul.
