HYDERABAD : The bird flu scare left the poultry industry in Andhra Pradesh in a state of shock as the sale of chicken fell drastically by 50 per cent resulting in a loss of Rs. 3 crores on Sunday alone. (There were reports of bird flu cases in Nandurbar district in Maharashtra.) As against an average 10 lakh birds across the State on Sundays, the sale came down steeply to five lakhs by evening. The average revenue from sale of chicken on Sundays is said to be Rs. 7 crores but reports indicated that it was around Rs. 4 crores on Sunday. Chicken outlets in the twin cities and its surrounding areas, which sell six lakh birds on Sundays, were the worst hit as customers stayed away. The sale fell to three lakh birds and the shops, which had procured large quantity of broiler and layer varieties were disappointed.
